Britain has, through the World Food Programme, helped Malawi with a £3 million (over K6.8 billion) grant, aimed at buying food for close to 300,000 of the 2.1 million people affected by El Nino in the country.
British High Commissioner to Malawi, Fiona Ritchie, has since called upon donors to help Malawi.
“We came in because we heard the President’s call of an external hand. We want to set an example so that other donors should come in and help affected Malawians,” said Ritchie.
Commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba, applauded the British Government for what he called timely support.
Kalemba said they need over $446 million and thus far, they have collected over $100 million to help people affected by floods and the dry spells.
