Malawi Congress Party Ward Councillor for Mlare, Bellium Msukwa, has been elected as Chairperson of Karonga District Council.
Councillor Msukwa, who previously served as the council’s chairperson in 2021, stated that the people of Karonga can anticipate more development projects during his term in office. He also issued a warning that justice would be served regarding the misappropriation of K29.1 million by certain council staff members.
“This time, residents should expect the installation of street lights on key town roads, the grading of more earth roads, improved sanitation, and a crackdown on corrupt practices within our council,” Msukwa affirmed.
Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa expressed confidence that the new chairperson would fulfill his promises to the people of the district.
During the full council meeting, Msukwa emerged victorious with nine votes, surpassing his predecessor Misheck Mwaijengo, who only received two votes. King Mvula, the MCP Councillor for Kaporo Ward, was elected as the vice chairperson with eight votes, defeating Ethel Mwansa who received three votes.
