Malawi Embassy in Rabat welcomes new students

The Malawi Embassy in Rabat recently conducted an orientation seminar for newly arrived Malawian students set to pursue various academic and vocational programmes in Morocco.

The seminar, which covered student welfare, cultural adaptation, academic expectations, and scholarship guidelines, marked a key step in supporting the students as they embark on their educational journey.

The 25 students who attended the session are part of a larger group of 63 who have already arrived under the Moroccan Government’s scholarship programme. Malawi’s Ambassador to Morocco, Kennedy Lweya, emphasised that the scholarships reflect the strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.

“This scholarship initiative demonstrates the deepening relationship between Malawi and Morocco. The Joint Commission of Cooperation we have signed is already yielding tangible benefits for our students,” said Lweya.

Following discussions during the signing of the Joint Communiqué on the Government-to-Government (G2G) Agreement on Fertiliser on 16 January 2025, the Moroccan Government has increased its scholarship quota to 100 for the 2025–2026 academic year. More admissions are currently being processed to meet this target.

Lweya further highlighted the Malawi Government’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities, particularly in vocational training.

“We aim to send more students to pursue vocational skills training in alignment with His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s ATM Strategy, which prioritises investments in Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining,” he explained.

According to Lweya, many vocational students will be placed at the City of Skills and Competencies in Laayoune, Southern Morocco, where they will receive specialised training aligned with Malawi’s economic development agenda.
