Department of Immigration has described the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) as critical in strengthening national security and enhancing immigration processes at the borders.
Acting Director General for Immigration, Fletcher Nyirenda, made the remarks in Lilongwe during the training of Immigration Officers on MIDAS.
According to Nyirenda, the system seeks to modernise immigration services, including border control services to be rolled out in 17 border posts across the country.
Nyirenda said the system will be connected to other international organisations to ensure that those who are entering the country are legible and have clean records.
Chief of Mission for the International Organisation for Migration in Malawi (IOM), Nomagugu Ncube, said the system will enable the Immigration Services to collect data with the use of technology, unlike in the past when they were using manual to process visas and other travel documents.
