National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has warned of potential flooding of the Shire River this week due to the threat of Tropical Cyclone Jude in making landfall in the Southern Region.
Earlier today, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS,) revealed that the cyclone is located 470 kilometres from Phalombe District, after being observed near Nampula in Mozambique.
According to the DCCMS, the storm is expected to affect the districts of Mulanje, Phalombe, Zomba, Mangochi, Machinga, Thyolo, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Blantyre, Balaka, Ntcheu, Neno, Mwanza, Salima and Dedza.
In a statement, NWRA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dwight Kambuku, says the authority will continue to monitor the occurrence and impact of Cyclone Jude on the water levels in Shire River upstream and downstream of the Kamuzu Barrage in Liwonde, Machinga District.
“NWRA, therefore, advises concerned institutions and individuals to take precautionary measures and be alert during this time,” reads part of the statement.
