Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola, has issued a stern warning against vandalising ESCOM materials.
Speaking during an awareness meeting at Mangochi stadium, Matola said the government through his ministry has reformed laws against perpetrators of vandalism of ESCOM material, stressing that the long arm of the law will catch up with them.
“President Dr Lazarus Chakwera realises that a country without good electricity cannot attract investors that’s why we have reformed laws to make sure anyone found vandalising ESCOM property should be properly punished,” said Matola.
ESCOM Zone Engineer for Mangochi, Liwonde, Machinga, Balaka and Ntcheu, Martin Mbwandila, said the utility body continues to lose huge amount of money by replacing vandalized property.
“In the last 2 quarters, ESCOM has lost almost K90 million in the Southern Region alone,” said Mbwandira.
