Zomba District Council is fully prepared and organised to handle any natural disasters that may occur, according to the Council’s Director of Planning and Development (DPD), Precious Kamtsitsi.
Speaking on Friday during a Disaster Risk Management and Evacuation Planning meeting in Liwonde, Kamtsitsi emphasised the importance of preparedness.
“Disasters are natural calamities that can happen at any time. As a council, we believe it is essential to have plans in place. This ensures that, in the event of a disaster, we have a reference document outlining strategies to effectively manage the situation,” he said.
Kamtsitsi added that the plan would also assist in mobilising and securing support from donors, who would have an existing document to refer to if they wish to provide assistance.
He further mentioned that the district will soon begin activities to popularise these plans, ensuring that every citizen is informed and involved.
Great Munthali, standing in for Disaster Risk Management Officer Violet Jimu, highlighted the significance of the meeting, noting that it provided the district with an opportunity to prepare for potential disasters.
The meeting, which drew participants from various sectors and development partners, produced several resolutions to disaster management.
