Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has launched a campus radio project to ensure that students have practical training for radio content production and broadcasting.
The project will be rolled out in ten institutions of higher learning and Shareworld University in Lilongwe has become the first in the Central Region and will be broadcasting at a radius of 20 Kilometres.
Macra is providing broadcast equipment such as a transmitter, antenna, mixer, microphones, audio processors and a generator for power backup.
In his remarks, Jerry Jana of Shareworld University thanked Macra for the initiative, stressing that they remain committed to making the most of the facility.
He added that Malawi continues to face knowledge gaps in education, health, climate and its impacts as well as business hence the new radio will help close the gaps.
Macra Director General, Daud Suleman, said the initiative aims at making broadcasting services accessible.
Suleman further said another target is to empower students to be able to use multimedia equipment in their communication studies and help institutions generate income through adverts from Small and Medium Enterprises.
Other institutions that will benefit from the project are The University of Malawi, Mzuzu University, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, MIJ (Mzuzu campus), Karonga TTC, St. Lukes Medical College, Malawi University of Science and Technology and Malawi Adventist University.
