European Union (EU) has provided an additional € 20.4 million (about K38 billion) for the rehabilitation project of the M1 road.
EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, made the remarks in Lilongwe during an engagement with the media.
Skinnebach said they have approved the additional support on top of the €140 million they provided together with the European Investment Bank so that the project can contribute to the economic development of the country.
Chief Executive Officer for Roads Authority, Ammiel Champiti, commended the EU as the M1 rehabilitation project is one of the critical projects for the development of Malawi.
Champiti said the project has made a significant progress despite some delays made due to administration and compensation issues.
According to Champiti, construction works on the three lots of M1 road; from Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe to Kasungu, from Kasungu to Jenda Township and Jenda to Mzimba are all expected to be completed in early 2026.
