Accurate reporting is key — Kunkuyu

Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu has called for ethical and professional reporting to avoid misinformation as the country prepares for the September General Election.

Kunkuyu made the call in Lilongwe during the launch of iVerify Malawi, a system designed to identify harmful online content.

The technology is being implemented by Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

He stressed that false information can hurt peace, stability and the integrity of electoral processes. He therefore reminded the media of their crucial role in verifying reports before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation.

UNDP Malawi Resident Representative, Fenella Frost, noted that the launch of iVerify marks a significant step in addressing misinformation and disinformation in the country.

MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga highlighted that the iVerify system will allow the public to report suspected fake news that could incite violence during electoral processes.
