Deputy Minister of Local Government, Owen Chomanika, says Malawian film makers should utilise the European Film Festival, which is underway in Lilongwe, to grow the movie industry.
Chomanika says thus far, the film industry has shown that there is a lot of potential in the country.
However, he stressed the need for investing in self improvement by patronising events like the film festival, which has started today at the EU Ambassador’s residence in Area 10.
EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, said the festival is an opportunity for Malawian movie makers as stakeholders get to appreciate creativity in Malawi through the locally made films that are incorporated in the festival programme.
Skinnebach said the non-Malawian audience that patronise the festival gets to learn a lot about Malawian culture through the films.
The film festival shall proceed tomorrow and on Saturday, there shall be a Cinema and all activities relating to the festival are expected to end on 2 November at Tumaini festival in Dowa District.
