CAMFED calls for concerted action on school retention rate

Experts in the education field have urged traditional leaders to spring into action and help improve the country’s retention rate of learners in primary school.

During a symposium at Mponela in Dowa District that brought together the academia, chiefs and other experts, it was noted that despite impressive enrolment rates since free primary school was introduced in 1994, the country still faces a significant challenge in keeping children in school, particularly girls.

A trend analysis presented by University of Malawi lecturer Esmy Kadzamira showed that while over 1.1 million children enrolled in Standard 1 in 2016,it is only 228,000 that went all the way and sat for the Primary School Leaving Certificate in 2024.

In a powerful call to action, Grace Kafulatila, Director of Education Youth and Sports, urged traditional leaders to help in containing school dropout rates, pointing out that by working together, it would create a safer environment that allows girls to thrive and reach their full potential.

Susan Silika, Executive Director of CAMFED Malawi, emphasized the critical role that traditional leaders play in shaping the future of girls’ education.

“With their influence and authority, they can challenge harmful cultural norms and promote positive change. By creating bylaws that protect and support children, they can help ensure that every child has access to quality education,” she said.

Senior Chief Lukwa from Kasungu District said the symposium had “opened his eyes” to the urgent need for action, vowing to use his authority to create positive change and ensure that every child in his community succeeds in educational pursuits.
