Govt calls for inclusivity in technical and tertiary education

Lucy Magagula, the Deputy Director of Inclusive Education in the Ministry of Education, has called on tertiary and technical education institutions to embrace inclusive education.

Magagula made the sentiments during the National Inclusive Education Strategy review in Lilongwe.

Magagula noted that while over 190,000 learners with disabilities are enrolled in primary schools, only about 200 learners are currently attending universities and technical colleges.

Jennifer Ngwira, a lecturer at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, pointed out the challenges faced by tertiary institutions, including a shortage of trained personnel in inclusive education.

She said only one tertiary institution in the country is training teachers in inclusive education to degree level.
