Women in ICT have been urged to create a strong community where they can learn from one another, share experiences and develop solutions that can contribute to Malawi’s digital economy.
The Director of ESCOM Optic Fibre Communications, Stella Senti, said this at the opening of the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) Women in ICT Conference in Blantyre.
She said women in ICT have the potential to develop innovative solutions that can benefit communities and contribute to the country’s digital transformation.
Senti said that as technology continues to evolve, women in ICT need to keep upgrading their skills and take a leading role in understanding emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
ICTAM Executive Member responsible for Women, Elizabeth Mwale, said the conference aims to create a community where women can learn from one another, share experiences and find solutions to challenges affecting the sector.
One of the participants, Shalom Ngambi, said it is encouraging to see increased representation of women in ICT departments.
Ngambi gave examples such as the Accountant General’s Department and the Department of E-Government.
She also challenged the perception that ICT is a career that can only be pursued by men.
The two-day conference is being held under the theme “ Redefining Leadership in the AI and Cybersecurity Era.”
