Parliament needs K400m to host CPA Africa Regional Conference

Speaker of Parliament and President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region, Sameer Suleman, has appealed to the private sector and well-wishers for support ahead of the 55th CPA Africa Regional Conference.

Parliament will host the conference and AGM from 9 to 16 August 2026.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe, Suleman said Parliament is facing a funding gap of K400 million from the projected budget of about K900 million needed to effectively host the event.

He said the conference is expected to attract more than 300 delegates, including 18 Speakers of Parliament from across Africa.

The Speaker added that this reflects the confidence the CPA has in Malawi’s Parliament, hence the need for stakeholders to support it.

The leader of the CPA Africa Region said the conference can boost the country’s economy through increased business for the tourism and hospitality industries, transport services, and demand for local products.

The 55th CPA and Annual General Meeting will also focus on strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing parliamentary oversight, promoting good governance, and improving the effectiveness of legislatures across Africa.

The conference will be held under the theme Reviewing the Social Contract Parliaments as Catalysts for Inclusive Growth and Citizen Trust.
