Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia are seeking to accelerate implementation of commitments under the Nacala Development Corridor, with officials calling for clear actions, timelines and responsibilities to address outstanding work.
Malawi’s Director of Policy and Planning in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Victor Lungu, said the sector cluster meeting in Maputo should move beyond reviewing progress and tackle constraints holding back implementation.
He emphasised that the meeting should translate directives from the 10th Nacala Development Corridor Management Committee into practical results.
“Our deliberations should produce clear priorities, realistic timelines and a shared understanding of who will take each action forward,” Lungu said.
He added that the three countries should also advance outstanding memoranda of understanding on sanitary and phytosanitary measures in agriculture, standards, quality assurance, accreditation and metrology, as well as the Chipata–Serenje Rail Project.
Nacala Development Corridor Secretariat Executive Director Dr Ângelo Eduardo Mondlane said effective development of the corridor depended on cooperation beyond transport and logistics.
“The Nacala Development Corridor connects our countries through transport and logistics networks, but its full potential also depends on close cooperation in trade facilitation, infrastructure planning, border management, investment promotion and other areas of shared interest,” Mondlane said.
He noted that the Secretariat would track agreed actions and communicate progress to ensure continuity between meetings.
The technical meetings run from 6 to 9 October 2026.
