Dr Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah has been sworn in as the fifth President of Namibia, becoming the first female president of the country.
Malawi Vice President Dr Michael Usi represented President Dr Lazarus Chakwera at the ceremony, which took place at that country’s State House in Windhoek, Namibia and coincided with the celebrations of Namibia’s 35th Anniversary of Independence.
In her acceptance speech, President Ndaitwah said her leadership will build on the solid foundations laid by the four former presidents of the country.
She added that she will also dwell on women’s empowerment, stressing women will attain positions not based on gender but merit.
Outgoing President of Namibia, Dr Nangolo Mbumba, said the struggle for gender justice has paid off in their country with the ushering in of a female president.
Mbumba said this stems from sacrifices made by brave Namibians, who fought for their freedom and independence.
Guest of Honour at the ceremony, President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan, applauded President Ndaitwah for setting the bar high for Africa and Namibia’s girl child.
Before being elected as president in December 2024 Dr Ndaitwah served as that country’s Vice President.
