Police hunt for ‘prophet’ who allegedly falsified reincarnation

Police are searching for a ‘prophet’ (name withheld) accused of orchestrating a false reincarnation of a deceased Village Headman (name withheld) from Mtandire.

According to Cassim Manda, Lingadzi Police spokesperson, in 2023, the said ‘prophet’ approached mourners in Mtandire, claiming he could bring back the deceased chief who had passed away earlier that year.

The ‘prophet’ then identified 45-year-old Chipiliro Mbewe, whom he connived with and paraded as the deceased Village Headman.

He gave him a haircut and new clothes and presented him to the mourners as the resurrected chief.

Despite Mbewe bearing no resemblance to the late chief, the prophet convinced the mourners to accept him, promising that his appearance would soon revert to its original state.

Mbewe has since been arrested on charges of impersonation, criminal simulation and rape, following reports that he lived with the late chief’s wife and married two other women.

He is originally from Zuze Village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza District.
