MEC DECLARES GWENGWE WINNER, QUASHES COMPLAINTS FROM COMPETITOR

Malawi Electoral Commission has established that Malawi Congress Party MCP candidate Willard Gwengwe did not contravene any of the electoral laws when he visited some polling centres during the casting of votes thereby declaring him the winner of the just-ended by-election in Dedza Central Constituency.

Speaking when he officially announced results at the main tally centre in Dedza, MEC Chairperson, Justice Chifundo Kachale, said the Commissioners examined all evidence brought to their attention and found no wrongdoing from the presentation.

Making his determination, Justice Kachale declared Gwengwe the winner of the 16 November by-election with 7913 votes followed by Independent candidate Jacob Kaumphawi who got 7361 votes while Democratic Progressive Party candidate, Andrew Kowedza, had 403 votes.

Justice Kachale has also emphasised the need for people in the country to acquaint themselves with the new electoral law before the forthcoming Tripartite General Elections.
