APM pledges continued collaboration with churches for national development

By Mercy Zamawa

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working with churches as partners in national development, particularly in education, health and social services.

The President delivered the message through Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda, who represented him during celebrations marking 150 years of the CCAP Blantyre Synod at Henry Henderson Institute School of Excellence grounds in Blantyre.

Chaponda said the church has played a significant role in Malawi’s development through the establishment of schools and health facilities, promoting modern agriculture, entrepreneurship and a culture of hard work and integrity.

He cited Henry Henderson Institute and Mulanje Mission Hospital as examples of the church’s contribution to education and healthcare, adding that its work has helped shape the country’s development.

The President also urged the church to continue promoting love, unity and forgiveness, quoting John 13:35, which says people will recognise Christ’s disciples by their love for one another.

Chaponda said the church should demonstrate unconditional love by serving the poor, forgiving others and uniting Malawians, stressing that spiritual leaders must practise love rather than merely preach about it.

On the country’s economic situation, Chaponda said President Mutharika is aware of the challenges facing Malawians and is working to improve their livelihoods and restore economic stability. He also conveyed the President’s call for churches and people of faith to continue praying for Malawi’s economic recovery, peace, unity and wisdom among leaders.

The President congratulated CCAP Blantyre Synod for attaining 150 years, acknowledging its contribution to the country’s spiritual and socio-economic development.
