The National Audit Office (NAO) says it is strengthening efforts to improve accountability in public resource management through an audit action plan tracking dashboard and a Citizen Engagement Strategy to enhance public participation in auditing processes.
Speaking at the National Inception and CSO Mapping Meeting in Lilongwe, Assistant Auditor General Frank Chitanda said the measures were intended to strengthen follow-up on audit recommendations and ensure citizens and civil society organisations actively participate in promoting accountability.
Chitanda said the office launched its Citizen Engagement Strategy in May 2025 to provide structured mechanisms for citizen involvement in public audits, adding that accountability was essential to achieving Malawi 2063.
The meeting also marked the launch of an African Institute of Corporate Citizenship through the Integrity Platform (AICC )project, supported by German Development Cooperation and the European Union through GIZ, to strengthen citizen engagement in public audit and accountability.
GIZ PFEM Team Leader, Lukas Fischer, said civil society organisations play an important role in bringing community concerns to auditors and ensuring audit findings translate into practical action.
AICC Chief Executive Officer, Driana Lwanda, said the organisation would coordinate civil society groups through its Integrity Platform to empower citizens to question the management of public resources and demand accountability from duty bearers.
