Faith without borders: How Malawi’s Hindu community keeps its traditions alive

For more than two decades, the Hindu community in Malawi has maintained a religious and cultural tradition that brings together families, generations and people from different backgrounds through the annual celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The festival, held in honour of Lord Ganesh, one of the deities worshipped in Hinduism, is more than a religious occasion.

It represents a connection to faith, cultural identity and the responsibility of passing traditions on to younger generations.

Although the celebrations last 11 days in India, the Hindu community in Malawi observes the festival over five days.

For members of the community, the occasion provides an opportunity to come together in prayer, reflect on their beliefs and strengthen relationships while celebrating their heritage in a country known for its diverse religious and cultural traditions.

Member of the Hindu community, Sonu Kalaria, says the festival has remained an important part of their lives since its introduction in Malawi more than 20 years ago.

“Ganesh Chaturthi is an important celebration for us because it brings the Hindu community together in prayer and fellowship. We have been celebrating this festival in Malawi for more than 20 years, and it gives us an opportunity to preserve our religious and cultural traditions and pass them on to the younger generation,” says Kalaria.

For the community, preserving religious identity while embracing the wider society is an important part of living as a diaspora.

The Indian High Commissioner to Malawi, Amararam Gujar, describes Ganesh Chaturthi as a symbol of unity in diversity, bringing together people from different backgrounds through their shared faith and cultural heritage.

“Ganesh Chaturthi represents unity in diversity. It brings together people from different backgrounds to celebrate their shared faith and cultural identity. We are grateful to the Government of Malawi for creating an environment where people can freely practise their religion and celebrate their traditions,” says Gujar.

He says the celebrations also provide an opportunity to strengthen relations between the Indian community and Malawians.
“Although we come from different cultural backgrounds, we share the values of unity, friendship and mutual respect. The festival gives us an opportunity to strengthen these relationships,” he adds.

Beyond the cultural celebrations, Ganesh Chaturthi carries spiritual significance for Hindu devotees.

Secretary of Hindu Associations, Kalyan Sundaram, says the festival is among the most important celebrations in Hinduism, commemorating the birth of Lord Ganesh.

The celebration is key in our Hindu Faith – Sundaram

“Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu faith. It commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesh, and during this period devotees observe fasting, offer prayers and participate in various religious activities,” says Sundaram.

He explains that the occasion also promotes values that extend beyond religious observance.

“Beyond the religious celebrations, the festival teaches us the importance of supporting one another, uplifting those around us and living together in harmony. It is also an opportunity for families to teach children about their faith and cultural heritage,” he says.

For the Hindu community in Malawi, maintaining these traditions does not mean remaining isolated from the society in which they live.

Instead, members say they have continued to embrace local communities, participate in the country’s social life and contribute to an environment where different religious and cultural identities can coexist.

Their experience offers an example of how communities can preserve their heritage while building meaningful relationships with people of different beliefs.

As the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations continue, the Hindu community’s message extends beyond its religious boundaries: faith, cultural identity and respect for diversity can provide a foundation for unity in a multicultural society.
