Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio 2FM Presenter Mwai Simbota has made the nation proud by grabbing the Best Actress Award in Feature Film Southern Africa at a ceremony held at the Zambian-Italian Cultural Centre in Lusaka, Zambia.
Simbota played Cecilia, an Interpol officer in the movie titled Misnomer. With a brother with albinism, Cece is passionate about the specific mission to know those behind the killings of people with albinism because to her it hits home.
She said the award motivated her to keep perfecting her acting career.
” I was truly excited and felt blessed at the moment, and also just happy to represent my country,” said Simbota.

“Chaz (Chawezi Munthali) heard about me from my previous project which also screened in the USA where he lives and allowed me to audition for the role and I got it,” added Simbota.
This is Simbota’s second award, the first was right here at home from the Film Association of Malawi for Best Actress in 2022.
She has since encouraged upcoming artists To keep dreaming and pushing hard. She said the industry is growing and the bridge between Malawi, other African countries and the entire world as a whole is not that long anymore.
“As a collective unit with the right support, we can make it big on the international stage,” she asserted.
The festival locally known in Zambia as SOTAMBE (which means come and watch) is an international film festival which pools artists across Southern Africa. This year it commenced on 23 September in Lusaka, Zambia and the award ceremony was on the final day of the festival Friday, 29 September 2023 at the Zambia-Italian Cultural Centre.
