Dedza women take lead in environmental conservation

An organisation called ‘Dauya Ladies Environmental Group’ has embarked on briquette manufacturing to conserve the environment and economically empower women in Dedza district.

Founder of the organisation, Chifundo Stevens, says the initiative is meant to reverse the negative impact of deforestation while encouraging proper waste management.

An environmentalist, Maloto Chinkombero, has commended the move, citing it as a poverty eradicator and a sure way to contribute towards clean energy alternatives.

“This will likely reduce pressure on forests in Dedza which are being destroyed for charcoal and firewood,” Chimkombero said.

Dauya Ladies Environmental Group, which has 21 women members, was set up in 2021 as a charitable institution.
