Maranatha International is expanding into the health sector with the opening of hospitals in several parts of Malawi under a new corporate social responsibility initiative.
To mark the launch, the organisation says members of the public will receive free medical services during the first week of operations. Patients will only be required to pay for any medicine prescribed after consultation, while all other medical services will be provided at no cost.
Maranatha Academy Managing Director, Enerst Kaonga, said the initiative is intended to ease the financial burden many Malawians face when seeking healthcare.
He said some people delay visiting hospital because they cannot afford consultation fees, allowing their conditions to worsen.
“The free services are meant to encourage people to seek medical attention early,” said Kaonga.
The new facilities will operate under the name Matete Medical Care and will open in Lunzu and Machinjiri in Blantyre, as well as Mponela in Dowa.
Maranatha International says it plans to extend the service to other parts of the country.
Widely recognised for its work in the education sector, Maranatha International says healthcare will become another key area of its community development efforts.
The organisation says improving access to quality health services is part of its commitment to supporting the wellbeing of Malawians.
