President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed the government’s commitment towards supporting the agriculture sector for the betterment of the country’s economy.
He was speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during an engagement with farmers under the Farmers Union of Malawi.
Dr Chakwera said it is encouraging to note that Malawi is doing well when it comes to the production of various crops, both at the local and global level.
He said there is a great need for the government and the farmers to work closely together in protecting produce realised in the country.
The Malawi leader also stressed on the need to combat poverty by ensuring that Malawi produces a lot and ventures into value addition.
The President said farming is the future of Malawi and venturing into agriculture commercialization is the way to go forward.
Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) president, Maness Nkhata, said the farmers are happy to engage the President on various issues, adding that her organization has been working with the government in the implementation of several programmes.
“Our organisation decided to meet the President to, among other aspects, express gratitude for the continued support as well as see how best us farmers can support the government’s aspiration in achieving the Malawi 2063,” Nkhata said.
She also highlighted some challenges the farmers in Malawi are facing and asked the President to ensure that farmers benefit from various programmes initiated by the current administration.
Principal Secretary for Irrigation in the Ministry of Agriculture, Engineer Jeffrey Mamba, said FUM is key in facilitating various agricultural programmes, with support from the ministry.
The meeting was held in recognition of the support farmers render to the growth of the country’s economy.
