Team Malawi has produced mixed results at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland on Tuesday and also at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Starting with football, the Scorchers defeated WAFCON defending champions, Nigeria, 3-2 at Al Madina Stadium.
This was Nigeria’s first competitive defeat in about two years.
The match was goalless for about 70 minutes, but the Chawinga Sisters, Temwa and Tabitha, proved to be lethal.
Temwa scored in the 73rd minute and in the 79th minute, it was Tabitha’s.
Nigeria equalised through Rasheedat Ajibade via a penalty in the 90+2 minute, but Temwa scored again 3 minutes later.
In the dying minutes, substitute Uchenna Kanu scored the second and last goal for Nigeria.
At the end of the match, Temwa was awarded as the player of the match.
Coach for the Scorchers, Lovemore Fazili, said the game was won because the players did not underrate themselves.
“They knew that there is something that they were supposed to give to Malawians,” Fazili said.
Malawi are now second in Group C, below Zambia, who have a superior goal difference after cruising past Egypt 6-nil.
Scorchers’ next game is against Egypt on 1 August, then they will finish off the group stages against Zambia on 5 August.
At the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Asimenye Simwaka booked her place in the women’s 400m semi-finals after clocking 54.16 seconds in the opening round.
The semi-final is scheduled for the morning of 30 July 2026.
In netball, the Malawi Queens lost 68-32 to Australia.
This means they still have 2 points from 4 games, and they are number 4.
Queens’ next game is against Tonga on 30 July in their final group match.
In swimming, competing in the Men’s 50m Butterfly, Luka Smit secured third place in 28.34 seconds, with Asher Banda finishing close behind in fourth at 28.52 seconds.
In the Women’s 50m Freestyle, Zoe Rebello also claimed a fourth-place, clocking a time of 30.57 seconds.
However, none of them qualified for the next round.
In boxing, Elias Bonzo was knocked out in the second round by Zambian Emmanuel Katema in the Men’s 65kg category.
