President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has arrived in New York City in the United States of America to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
He was welcomed by the Ambassador for Malawi to the United States of America, Justice Esmie Chombo, Malawi’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Lieutenant General Clement Namangale and other officials.
During his stay, the President will attend the Summit of the Future and a high-level meeting on the Miombo Forest Declaration.
The President will engage in bilateral discussions with fellow heads of state, international organisation leaders, and investors to strengthen Malawi’s diplomatic and economic partnerships, aimed at advancing the country’s Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) strategy and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Dr Chakwera will also host the Malawi Partners Conference 2024, which will focus on securing long-term food security solutions for the country.
Last year, Malawi benefited from the UNGA when President Chakwera signed the second Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact with the U.S. government for rural road network construction.
The 79th UNGA is being held under the theme: Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.
