Link for Education Governance (LEG) has called on the government, through the Ministry of Education and relevant agencies, to safeguard and uphold the right to education for all during emergencies.
The appeal comes as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 2025 Global Action Week for Education.
LEG Executive Director, Limbani Nsapato, noted that during climatic disasters, education infrastructure is often destroyed, while both teachers and learners are displaced resulting in prolonged school closures.
“Stakeholders must ensure that education pathways are safe, inclusive, and gender-responsive, particularly for vulnerable populations,” said Nsapato in a press statement.
Social commentator, Lucky Mbewe, echoed the sentiment, underscoring the urgent need for longstanding policies to be fully implemented.
Mbewe further urged duty bearers to ensure their actions reflect the realities on the ground.
The 2025 Global Action Week for Education is being commemorated under the theme: “Education Saves Lives: Protect Education in Emergencies.”
