Maranatha Academy says it is expanding access to quality education by identifying talented learners from underserved communities through its annual scholarship programme.
The 2026 scholarship entrance examinations got underway on Monday at designated centres across Malawi’s Southern Region, attracting scores of learners eager to compete for an opportunity to study at the academy.
From early morning, candidates, accompanied by their parents and guardians, gathered at examination centres to sit papers in Mathematics, English and Chichewa.
At Khonjeni Primary School in Thyolo District, more than 40 learners took part in the examinations, while Nambiro Primary School in Phalombe District also recorded a strong turnout. Similar exercises were conducted at other centres across the region.
The scholarship programme is designed to identify academically promising learners, particularly those from disadvantaged and hard-to-reach areas, and offer them access to quality primary and secondary education through full or partial scholarships.
Speaking during a visit to one of the examination centres, Maranatha Academy Director, Ernest Kaonga, said the encouraging response reflected the growing demand for educational opportunities among Malawian families.
“We are pleased to see so many learners taking advantage of this opportunity. Our goal is to ensure that talented children are not denied quality education simply because of where they come from or their family’s financial circumstances,” said Kaonga.
He added that the scholarship initiative forms part of the academy’s broader vision of nurturing future leaders by investing in young people with academic potential.
“We believe there are gifted children in every part of the country, including the most remote communities. Through this programme, we want to discover that potential and provide the support they need to achieve their ambitions,” he added.
The scholarship examinations in the Southern Region precede the Central Region assessments, which are scheduled for 29 July 2026.
Officials said the examinations were conducted smoothly, with invigilators and academy staff ensuring candidates completed the process in a well-organised environment.
Over the years, Maranatha Academy’s scholarship programme has enabled many academically gifted learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to excel in national examinations, with several former beneficiaries progressing to universities and professional careers.
