British High Commission through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has pumped in £4 million (about K8.7 billion) to a Malawi-based consortium of three local women’s rights organisations.
The organisations are Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC), Girls Empowerment Network (GENET) and Human Rights for Women and Girls with Disabilities (WAG), who are set to work on a project called ‘Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza’.
British High Commissioner to Malawi, Fiona Richie, said the initiative is part of UK’s global commitment to tackling violence against women and girls.
A representative of the ‘Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza’ consortium, Maggie Kathewera Banda, expressed gratitude for the gesture, saying this will go a long way in addressing issues of Gender-Based Violence in the country.
Minister of Gender, Jean Sendeza, applauded the Consortium’s efforts in designing a project that addresses the pressing issue of Intimate Partner Violence, an aspect of GBV that affects countless individuals.
The project will be implemented in Balaka and Lilongwe, targeting about 750,000 beneficiaries.
