Oxfam Malawi has secured K207 million from Irish Aid and Oxfam International for the first phase of an El Niño-induced food insecurity response programme, targeting over 12,000 people.
Speaking in Phalombe during the launch, Country Director for Oxfam Malawi, Lingalireni Mihowa, said they will distribute a one-off of K50,000 in cash to beneficiaries in Phalombe, where 1,075 households will benefit, as well as in Mchinji and Lilongwe districts.
District Commissioner for Phalombe, Douglas Moffat, described the support as timely, given the severe hunger situation in the district.
One of the beneficiaries, Edna Mbewe, said her crops were destroyed by Cyclone Freddy-induced floods and an El Niño-induced dry spell.
