The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) has halted the construction of a warehouse along the bypass road in Lilongwe, being built by King Steel Malata Company, owned by a Chinese national, due to non-compliance with construction standards.
NICC has urged players in the construction industry to always comply with necessary procedures as regulated by the body.
Lyford Gideon Jere, NCIC Corporate Affairs Officer said the move comes following King Steel Malata company’s failure to comply with the necessary steps in the construction industry.
“The laws of Malawi demand that all construction projects be in line with set standards including that there should be a contractor and a consultant on any project and that such projects should use sustainable construction materials,” said Jere.
He added, “This is in order to ensure that infrastructure is of good quality , safe for users, and sustainable which NCIC says is not case with King Steel Malata’s project.”
The council said it also noted defiance to its stop order and compliance orders issued to King Steel Malata’s hence the action to involve the police.
Among other issues, NCIC’s order is against the company’s owner, Huamin Yang, who has been using common burnt bricks at the construction site, contrary to regulations.
The council has also warned other non-complying parties that NCIC will not relent in ensuring that construction industry players comply with the law to the letter.
Yang, the owner of the company denied to comment on the matter.
