Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has expressed concern over the continued use of burnt bricks in construction despite several campaigns to end such practices.
Speaking during the commemoration of the World Standards Day in Lilongwe, MBS Director General, Bernard Thole, urged the public to adopt the use of construction materials made out of cement to protect the environment in the face of climate change.
The bureau has also warned those producing sub-standard cement bricks, saying they are derailing efforts to end the burnt bricks tradition.
Thole highlighted that the bureau will continue testing and monitoring the quality of cement bricks and materials produced.
In his remarks, Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) Senior Environmental Officer, Patrick Nyirenda, said MEPA’s aim is to phase out the use of burnt bricks, phase by phase.
This year’s World Standards Day was held under the theme “a shared vision for better world: role of standards in mitigating climate change”.
