Renowned environmentalist Professor Sosten Chiotha is calling upon Bio Gas and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distributors to broaden their product offerings, aiming to promote the widespread adoption of clean energy among the public.
Professor Chiotha’s advocacy comes on the heels of notable sales surges reported by various Gas companies, aligning with Malawi’s sustainable development goal number 7, focusing on achieving access to clean and affordable energy by 2063.
“I think what needs to happen is that we should expand distribution. For example, in Zomba, we would travel to Blantyre just to buy gas. So other areas should also have a distribution centre,” he said.
265 Energy, a key player in the sector, reports a substantial uptick in demand, as highlighted by their spokesperson, Philip White.
White attributes this surge to heightened environmental awareness campaigns targeting the general populace.
“The main cause for this acceptance is the fact that we are saving the environment since the products are affordable and fast when using,” White said.
Moreover, Mphatso Elizabeth Gama, Marketing Manager for EcoGen, opines that escalating prices of conventional energy sources such as firewood and charcoal contribute significantly to the growing preference for alternative, cleaner options.
“Biogas is way faster to prepare meals or anything related to that,” Gama said. “In trying to mitigate climate change shocks, this is the way for now and the future generation.”
In the year 2023, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) disclosed a remarkable 50 percent increase in gas usage compared to a decade ago, marking a positive stride towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious energy landscape.
