The Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (FEDOMA) has again underscored the importance of the Persons with Disabilities Act, which was recently assented to by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera.
The organisation says the Act directly responds to the welfare of persons with disabilities.
In an interview with MBC, FEDOMA Executive Director, Symon Munde, singled out the establishment of the Council for Disability Affairs in the new Act as one key aspect in the implementation of disability programmes.
On 31 January, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera assented to Bill number 23 of 2023, the Persons with Disabilities Act.
At the same time, Malawi also ratified the African Charter on human and people rights.
The Disability Act repeals the old Persons Handicapped Act of 1972, which stakeholders say did not recognise some disabilities like albinism, epilepsy, and psychosocial.
