FAO pledges continued support towards Malawi’s food security efforts

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has pledged continued support to the Government of Malawi in its drive to achieve lasting food security.

FAO Representative to Malawi, Babagana Ahmadu, made the pledge as the organisation celebrates 80 years of existence worldwide and 39 years of service in Malawi.

Ahmadu said FAO has worked hand in hand with the government to provide technical support and mobilise resources aimed at strengthening food security, managing natural resources, and improving water systems.

“FAO has worked with the Government of Malawi in providing technical services and mobilising resources to drive action in food security, natural resources, and water management, among other areas,” said Ahmadu.

The World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director for Malawi, Hyoung-Joon Lim, said the two UN agencies will continue to work together to end hunger in the country.

“We will continue partnering with FAO to achieve food security in Malawi. FAO brings technical expertise while WFP provides operational experience,” said Lim.

“A hunger-free nation is one of Malawi’s priorities, and we will keep supporting the government towards that goal,” he added.

The Ministry of Agriculture has commended FAO for its continued collaboration, saying the partnership has delivered tangible results.

In his remarks, Geoffrey Mamba, Principal Secretary for Irrigation, said Malawi has benefited greatly from FAO’s support.

“Through our partnership with FAO, Malawi has made progress in several areas, from policy development such as the Agriculture Policy and the Extension Policy, to improved farmers’ field skills, better mobility for extension workers, and the rehabilitation of rural trading centres,” said Mamba.
