Balaka police make two more arrests in child assault case

Police in Balaka have arrested two additional individuals on suspicion of causing grievous harm to a nine-year-old girl, following the arrest of the victim’s mother, Lilian Matako, on Saturday.

Balaka Police Public Relations Officer, Gladson M’bumpha, confirmed the arrests of Ishmael Chitete, 20, and his brother Zuberi Chitete, 18. The brothers were apprehended early Sunday.

According to M’bumpha, the two are alleged to have taken part when the victim’s mother, LilianMatako, grabbed the victim and tied both her legs and arms to a tree and assaulted her while pouring water mixed with buffalo beans (Chitedze) on her body.

The three suspects are set to appear in court soon to face charges of acts intended to cause grievous harm.
