Renowned author Alfred Msadala, who is president of Book Publishers Association of Malawi (BPAM), says there is need for more distribution of locally written books to improve the reading culture in the country.
In an interview with MBC Digital, Msadala says Malawian authors expect readers to buy their books yet most locally written books are not readily available.
“Books must be an asset for each and every household in Malawi. If books are distributed to the populace, especially those in villages, the reading culture may improve,” Msadala said.
Msadala also urged Malawian authors to rethink their pricing and marketing strategies as high prices deter potential readers from buying the books.
Msadala’s call comes as Malawi gets set to join the rest of the world in commemorating World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April 2024.
This year’s theme is “Reading Your Way”.
