AUSC challenges Malawi to invest in talent

African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 has challenged Malawi and other member states to invest in talent development and build enduring sporting legacies.

AUSC Region 5 Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Mutoya, made the remarks at the conclusion of the AfroBasket Men’s Championship in Luanda, Angola.

Hosts Angola reaffirmed their dominance on the continent, securing their first title since 2013 and extending their record to 12 championships.

Meanwhile, in wheelchair basketball, South Africa’s Under-23 side clinched the IWBF Africa Championship.

Mutoya said the achievements of the two Region 5 nations demonstrate that excellence in sport goes beyond winning trophies and involves transforming lives, educating citizens, and inspiring future generations.

He added that Region 5, which comprises 10 countries, has the potential to evolve into a continental multi-sport powerhouse.

Reacting to the developments, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) acting Chief Executive Officer, Ivy Chinangwa, said Malawi is making steady progress in its sports transformation agenda.

Chinangwa said the National Qualification Framework, which aims to raise standards in coaching and overall performance across all sporting disciplines, is on course and expected to yield results in the near future.

She added that the programme is already addressing long-standing challenges faced by coaches and technical officials.
