Revised agricultural policies to spur economic development

Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, says the newly launched three agriculture policies will enable Malawi register economic development through the agriculture sector.

The policies are National Agriculture Policy, Agriculture Land Resources Management and National Irrigation Policies.

Kawale said the policies, which have been revised, are tailor-made for the Malawi 2063 blueprint.

He said the previous documents proved ineffective to boost performance of the sector in a bid to curb overdependence on rain-fed farming, increase productivity and enhance commercialisation and mechanisation drive.

Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Civil Society Agriculture Network, Farmers Union of Malawi and development partners have committed to ensuring smooth implementation of the policies for five years.
