Viral conjunctivitis hits Nkhata-Bay

Nkhata-Bay District has recorded 73 cases of the viral conjunctivitis disease, also known as pink eye, which is believed to have come from Tanzania through Karonga.

The development comes barely days after Karonga and Chitipa districts announced of the eye disease, whose symptoms include redness, itching, and tearing of the eyes, among others.

In a statement signed by Nkhata-Bay Director of Health and Social Services, Dr Topcy Mdolo, more cases have been registered at Chintheche in the area of Traditional Authority Malanda, and a few from Malengazoma and Fukamalaza.

He urges people to avoid sharing bath towels, rubbing eyes with dirty hands and to wash hands regularly with soap as a precaution.
