Small-scale irrigation boosts food security for Dedza farmers

Efforts to improve food security and income through small-scale irrigation are positively impacting the livelihoods of farmers in Dedza.

According to one of them, who is potato grower, Ikirifi Kambali, irrigation is a viable way out of poverty.

Kambali was speaking during a field visit to Malindima Irrigation Scheme, organised by Dedza District Council’s Agriculture Sector in conjunction with Self Help Africa.

He urged fellow youths to follow his example rather than engage in drinking and promiscuous behaviour.

Self Help Africa’s Dedza Office Food Security and Resilience Coordinator, Barton Mwale, said the organisation is committed to supporting the government’s efforts in securing food and enhancing the incomes of small-scale farmers in Malawi.

Programme Manager for Lilongwe Agriculture Development Division (ADD), Shira Kang’ombe, praised the organisation for supporting the government’s efforts to achieve Malawi Vision 2063.

Malindima Irrigation Scheme has 103 small-scale farmers, mostly growing potatoes in Kanyama Agriculture Extension Planning Area.
