The Media Network on Tobacco (MNT) has extended its congratulations to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Vice-President Dr Jane Ansah on their victory in the recently concluded elections.
In a statement issued by MNT Executive Committee Chairperson, Alfred Chauwa, the network expressed optimism that the new administration will provide continued support to the tobacco industry, a key pillar of Malawi’s economy and the country’s leading foreign exchange earner.
“Tobacco remains central to Malawi’s agricultural and economic development, sustaining millions of livelihoods across the value chain,” reads part of the statement.
“We believe that under President Mutharika’s leadership, the sector can remain resilient and adapt effectively to global market and regulatory changes.”
MNT noted that the industry continues to face mounting challenges due to growing global anti-tobacco campaigns and changing consumption trends.
The network has urged the new government to pursue balanced policies that promote sustainable production, diversification, and farmer welfare while aligning with international standards.
The MNT is a professional association of trained journalists from various media houses across Malawi. Its members are equipped with specialised knowledge of the tobacco sector, focusing on ethical and informed reporting to enhance public understanding of the industry’s contribution to the national economy.
