Minister of Mining Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma says the government is optimistic that the Kayerekera mine will enhance the country’s economy once it becomes operational in September this year.
He made the remarks during a visit to the Kayerekera mine, which is being run by Lotus Resources Africa Limited in Karonga District.
The minister then urged the company to be open in all its operations so that Malawians benefit from its resources as the government, led by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, is committed to growing the mining sector by introducing new policies.
He said the government has removed all the bottle necks that had been standing in the way of commencement of the operations at the mine.
Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga, where the Kayelekera mine is located, urged the media to write positive stories about Malawi, saying this will help more investors to consider investing in the country.
He also blamed the previous company for failing to support Malawians. He said the mine is a milestone in addressing the financial challenges the country is facing.
CEO of Lotus Resources, Greg Bittar, said the company is working to capitalise on the growing demand for uranium and the increasing recognition of nuclear power’s role in the clean energy transition.
Bittar added that they will work with the government of Malawi in bringing about economic growth.
Lotus Resources enjoys strong support from the Malawi government, which sees mining as a key pillar of economic development.
