Karonga District Council cracks whip on uncomplying mill operators

Karonga District Council is closing rice and groundnut mills operating in the central business district for failing to comply with waste management directives.

Physical Planning Officer for Karonga District Council, Ulemu Nyondo, says this is in accordance with a resolutions made during a meeting held on 17 June 2024 with the mill owners regarding the proper management of waste by rice and groundnut millers.

Nyondo said the closure will remain in effect until the waste on the premises are cleared and properly disposed of, in accordance with council regulations.

“Regretably, despite the 14 day notice provided, the premises still have significant waste accumulation which has not been disposed off properly. Consequently, we have been compelled to enforce the agreed upon measures to maintain cleanliness and public health standards within Karonga,” Nyondo said.

The council has since advised the mill owners to remove and dispose of all waste from their premises to designated dumping sites or an approved farm area.
