Karonga District Council cracks down on roaming cattle

Karonga District Council officials have joined forces with traditional chiefs in impounding stray cattle roaming the streets of Karonga Town, in a move to boost sanitation and public safety.

Group Village Headman Mwahimba said for a long time traders, customers and residents around the town have been complaining of the cattle which were just loitering around.

“We formulated new bylaws stating that any cow found roaming in town will be impounded, and owners must pay a K50,000 fee for its return. Today, we have managed to impound more than 100 cattle found roaming around town,” Mwahimba said.

Tereza Mhango from Luhimbo Village, who had her cow impounded and has paid the fine, said she will now be tethering it to ensure she no longer loses her hard earned money.
