Malawi commits to transforming the transport sector

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing a modern, inclusive and resilient transport system, describing the sector as a critical driver of economic transformation and regional trade.

Speaking during the official opening of the 19th Africa Forum of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) in Salima District, Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, said improving connectivity remains key for Malawi’s development, particularly as a land-linked country.

Mhango emphasised that transport plays a central role in unlocking trade opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area, which Malawi signed and ratified in 2018 and 2021, respectively.

CILT International Vice President and Chairperson for Africa, Ibrahim Jibril, has called for collaboration among key players in the transport and logistics sector to effectively address the challenges of infrastructure and policy enforcement that the sector is facing.

National President for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Malawi, Cuthbert Chinguo, says Malawi stands to benefit from global professionals who have shared expertise on improving the country’s transport and logistics systems.

Chinguo says such knowledge is key to helping Malawi transition towards more sustainable and resilient transport operations.

Held under the theme “Advancing Sustainable and Inclusive Transport and Logistics for Africa’s Future,” the forum has drawn regional and international delegates to discuss strategies for strengthening Africa’s transport and logistics systems.
