Malawi Against Physical Disability (MAP) General Manager, Alex Dzimkambani, has disclosed that Kachere Rehabilitation Centre is in dire need of modern equipment such as specialized beds and treadmills, which help to speed up patients’ recovery.
He was speaking at the centre in Blantyre when receiving a K5 million donation from PATCH Malawi.
Dzinkambani said the donation will help them in procuring new beds and support construction of a children’s ward at the facility.
Director of Health Sector and Inter-government Coordination in the Ministry of Health, Amon Nkhata, has meanwhile called on insurance companies in the country to consider funding rehabilitation centres as part of their social and corporate responsibility.
He said the majority of the patients who are referred to rehabilitation centres got their injuries from road and workplace-related accidents and as such, it is incumbent upon insurance companies to help those injured in getting proper rehabilitation care services.
PATCH Malawi representative, Vera Kamtukure, who is also the country’s Minister of Tourism, said she will continue mobilising funds from her local and international partners towards construction of the children’s ward as currently the centre only has wards for adults.
