APM delivers: Modern markets rising in the country

Democratic Progressive Party-led government of President Arthur Peter Mutharika is turning its manifesto into reality with modern markets taking shape in Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay and Chitipa districts.

This is part of President Mutharika’s bold pledge made in Parliament in February 2026 to build seven state-of-the-art markets across the country to transform trading and ignite economic growth.

A year after Malawians ushered him back in government with a landslide victory, the man fondly called “Adadi” is walking the talk.

In August, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, laid a foundation stones for Mkondezi Market in Nkhata Bay, the one-storey Mzuzu Market and Kapoka Market in Chitipa, a clear signal of intent to give traders dignity and business a boost.

Phiri told #MBCDigital this is about creating a conducive environment where trade thrives and the economy grows.

On the ground, the transformation is visible.

At Mkondezi, works are moving at lightning speed.

Market Chairperson Precious Mwandira says the new facility will be a game-changer – offering decent infrastructure and opening doors for economic growth.

Nkhata Bay District Commissioner David Gondwe is impressed, saying the market will give the lakeshore district a fresh face-lift and power its economy.

Site Supervisor for Energyz Building Contractors, Daniel Kaunda, says 35 percent of the work is already done, with over 200 locals employed on site.

For Aren Banda, one of the workers, it means no more staying idle but earning a living and putting food on the table.

Modern markets. Local jobs. Economic transformation. The #APM government is delivering.
